Fresh Med: Mediterranean

After studying a bit off campus in a nearby coffee shop, I decided to venture into this small, Cleveland Park eatery known as Fresh Med.

Upon entering, Fresh Med is casual and very minimal. There is little décor and the restaurant centers on a seemingly bare food case that contains a few salads (fatoush, tabouli, etc) and hummus. Although keeping the food at a visual location, none of these salads appeared to be very fresh—but the hummus did look promising.

As I debated over the falafel pita or the veggie platter, a man waiting for his order took the liberty of telling me that the hummus was “incredible”. So, in order to experience this “incredible” hummus, I ordered the veggie platter that included falafel, hummus, Greek salad and pita for a reasonable $8.75.

The other customer was right; the hummus was pretty incredible. It was not too lemony or over-spiced and it had the perfect amount of olive oil drizzled on top. However, this was probably the best thing on the menu. The pita was warm, yet very tough around the edges. In fact, it seemed like it had been sitting out for quite a while making it almost impossible to fold around my recently fried falafel patties. Speaking of falafel, I was giving a large portion of appropriately spiced chickpea balls, but the flavor was almost completely masked by a thick, very tough fried crust. In this case, as long as I poured enough tahini sauce over them, the falafel tasted at best, mediocre.

Overall, I give the falafel a 2/5, but the hummus definitely receives a 5/5, agreeing with other customers that it was delightful. Despite the customer-pleasing hummus I am not sure it is worth the trek to Cleveland Park for some tough, slightly old tasting falafel and pita. - Posted by Eater-outer Sarah M.

Cafe ACKC - Chocolate Cafe

Hi Everyone! We are beginning our first post with Cafe ACKC located near U-Street Cardozo.

Hot Drinks 5/5
Cupcakes 4/5
Atmosphere 4.5/5
Bathroom 5/5!

The ACKC Cafe represents itself as a cozy little cafe near U Street specializing in chocolate! Automatically, this cafe separates itself from the crowd by being one of the few (only 5) chocolate cafes in the district.

Specializing in hot chocolates with "diva" and "celebrity" inspired drinks, the baristas at ACKC definitely knew how to add little twists to their chocolate creations. Ranging from over 30 different kinds of chocolates, our brave reviewers at EatOut Gw tried out the "Liz Taylor" hot chocolate. The "Liz Taylor" was a unique blend of lavender leaves with melted hazelnut dark chocolates finished up with a slight sprinkle of crushed pistachios. The drink itself was very chocolaty with a hint lavender which finished off very well with the distinctive tastes of crushed pistachios.

The cupcakes at ACKC, although not their forte, were still very good. Our reviewers tried the "Pamela", which was a dark chocolate hazelnut souffle cupcake topped with whipped cream frosting drizzled over by melted caramel sauce. We gave the taste a 5/5 but the consistency got a 4/5 due to how hard it was. Although the cupcake tasted exceptional, "Pamela" obviously sat in the bakery way to long.

And don't forget, when you visit, this cafe is half chocolate store and half cafe. Overall, we definitely recommend this place to our fellow chocolate lovers!
